Bell towers like this one first started to appear in the 17th century. The bell tower from Schallendorf is built of large oak timbers using frame construction. It has a straw-thatched roof.

The bell was rung to alert inhabitants to imminent danger, such as fire, yet also to call them to prayers and to announce the death of a member of the community.
