Mountain hut in Austria

The buildings on the alpine pastures have always been built in the original architecture of the respective settlements. They therefore offer an insight into the traditional building techniques, which has rarely changed in the alpine pastures. In order to offer comparisons, buildings from different house landscapes were transferred to the Almsiedlung. The meeting of different types of huts also takes place in the open countryside.
On the so-called "Kuhalmen" were cows gealpt, whose milk in the mountain huts were processed to butter and cheese.
"Galtviehalmen" offered the cattle, which was not dairy because of youth or age, a valuable summer freshness.
The small alpine huts were mostly owned by a farmer, while larger farms were farmed by several farmers as community farms.
