In its function as a museum, the Austrian Open-Air Museum fulfills the following tasks: collecting, preserving, documenting and communicating!
Collection & inventory
The collection of the open air museum includes 98 historical farm buildings from all over Austria and South Tyrol (77 original historical buildings, 18 replicas, 4 reconstructions) from 6 centuries, trying to convey the most complete and authentic picture of the buildings to the visitor.
The collection also includes 130,000 farm work and everyday items, both purchased and donated to the museum as a donation by private individuals or institutions.

Documentation & Translation
The original buildings were translated from their original locations to the museum site, which requires an exact documentation of the building during construction and installation.
